An Android app I built by directing Claude Code. It tracks my daily push-ups, sit-ups and squats, my food, tasks and learning goals, pulls steps and weight from Samsung Health and Garmin, and estimates calories from a photo of my food through the Gemini API. I use it every day. This page is less about the app and more about the build loop I use for everything in this portfolio.

Why I built it

I was using a basic counter app for push-ups, sit-ups and squats, and paying for a full fitness app subscription just to log climbing sends. I kept downloading whole apps for one feature. So I listed what I actually track every day and built one app that does only that.

Learning the tool first

Before Ascend I built two small apps to learn Claude Code, about 1 to 2 weeks each. The first was a climbing log that does one thing. The second was a bill splitter that reads a photo of a receipt into line items through Gemini, so a bill can be split item by item.

How I build

  1. Brainstorm the idea, then have Claude check whether it's doable with the tools I have.
  2. Write it out myself: the goal, each screen or step, the tools, and the limits.
  3. Claude restates that as a detailed spec.
  4. Claude drafts the build prompt, and a fresh thread builds from it.
  5. I test on my phone and list every issue I find.
  6. Claude turns that list into a fix prompt. Repeat 5 and 6 until it works.

Claude writes the code (Kotlin, for this app). I decide what gets built, write the spec, test every version and decide when it's done. I used the same loop for V2 of the field report system, my job posting scanner and the Notion setup behind my job search.
